KS2 Tudor Norwich: A Place of Sanctuary?

Maximum group size 60, £6 per student, 10am until 2pm, minimum fee £240

The event

Norwich, 1565: the mayor and city authorities have invited the 'Strangers', foreign refugees from the Low Countries, to live and work in the city. Become a Stranger for the day as you get a taste of English life in Norwich. Learn about the lives and opinions of four different people. The citizens are divided about the Strangers' arrival and everyone is preparing in their own way.

Costumed characters lead the day in a carousel of four activities:

Meet former mayor Thomas Sotherton or Mistress Elizabeth Sotherton and learn how Tudor gentry feasted. See some of the private rooms in their house and find out why they welcomed the Strangers to Norwich.
Meet a modern historian and explore a letter which was written by a refugee at Strangers' Hall in 1567. Discover the real story of refugees in Norwich and have a go at writing with quill and ink.
Meet a Huguenot and find out why they have fled their home to make a new life in Norwich.
Meet a Tudor weaver who is very concerned about the impact of the refugees on local businesses, and make your own piece of textile to take home.

Aims and learning outcomes

"inspire pupils' curiosity to know more about the past...[and] equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, [and] weigh evidence" (Department of Education History Programmes of Study 2014, p.1).
To raise awareness of an important area of local history, including opinions regarding immigration and refugees.
Engage children with museum objects as sources of inspiration, knowledge and exploration.
Expand children's understanding of the culture and beliefs of people during the Tudor period and be able to link these to contemporary ideas
